The 20-Minute Rule: Building a Movement Habit That Sticks
Why big plans break
The most common exercise mistake isn't choosing the wrong workout — it's choosing a schedule your life can't hold. A five-day gym plan collapses the first week work runs late.
The rule
Twenty minutes, most days, anywhere. That's it. A brisk walk counts. A stretching video counts. Ten minutes out and ten minutes back counts.
Make it obvious
- Put your shoes where you can see them
- Anchor movement to an existing habit — after coffee, before dinner
- Track it somewhere visible (our community challenges work well for this)
Make it social
Twenty minutes with another person is a different experience than twenty minutes alone. Use the partner matcher to find someone at your pace in your zone.
When you miss a day
Miss one, never two. A single missed day is a data point; two is the start of a new habit — the wrong one.
The venues in our directory are graded partly on accessibility for beginners. Filter for fitness venues near you and pick the one with the lowest barrier to entry, not the fanciest equipment.
